IN FOND MEMORY OF
MARINE SGT. DENNIS HARTER
//////////////////////////////\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
The Dennis Harter Memorial Education
Program
was established in 1985 to educate
the students in Central Illinois about the Vietnam war and its veterans.
Dennis Harter along with Danny Rybczyk and David Hummels, all Nam vets,
started the program. Dennis died in 1998 and we named the program
in his honor.
WHO IS IN THE GROUP?
The group is comprised of about 20 Vietnam veterans. Some are combat vets and some are not. They are from all branches of service. with a wide variety of experiences and duty assignments.
TO WHOM DO YOU SPEAK?
The program seems to work best with
high school age students. Especially since in Illinois all high school
juniors are required to pass a U.S. History class.
We have addressed kids in junior high and on
occasion grade schoolers.
The size of the group addressed
has an effect on the presentation.
The best size is two or three classes
at one time
The best length for the program
is 90 to 120 minutes. It can be longer ar shorter if needed
WHAT TOPICS DO YOU COVER?
We are open to any topics relevant to the war and its effect on its veterans. Topics normally covered include agent orange, race relations, substance abuse, weapons, tactics, the enemy, climate, terrain, home coming, politics of the war, protests, our lives before and after the war and the POW/MIA issue.
WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO SCHEDULE A PRESENTATION?
Any time is a good time. May and Early June are usually booked early. Other times can be tied in by anniversaries of events. April - the fall of Siagon, January - Tet, February - recapture of Hue.
IS THERE ANY THING YOU WILL NOT SEAK ABOUT?
Some of the vets will not talk about killing as such but we will address the question in a tactful and truthful way.
WHERE IS THE PROGRAM LOCATED?
We are located in central Illinois
near Peoria.
We have travelled to schools over
50 miles from "home".
If the time allotted to the program
is reasonable we will travel anywhere within the state and possible into
neighboring states.
WHAT DOES A PRESENTATION COST?
We have never accepted any cash
for our presentations. Some schools provide us a lunch should we
be there in the morning and afternoon. If the distance traveled requires
overnight accomidations, we would appreciate assistance there. otherwise
there is no cost!
